Webcasting
- Delivery of audio and/or video to
computers connected to a network.
Streaming Media - An internet
data transfer technique that allows
the user to see and hear audio and
video files without lengthy download
times.
Windows Media Player® - Microsoft's
proprietary streaming technology player.
RealPlayer® - Real Networks'
proprietary streaming technology player.
QuickTime® - Apple Computer's
proprietary streaming technology player.
Encode - To compress audio
and/or video for transmission over
a network.
Flash® - Macromedia's vector-based
authoring tool.
Bit-rate - A measure of bandwidth,
expressed as the number of bits transmitted
per second - 56kbps, 100kbps, etc.
Dial-up - A connection to the
internet using a modem connected to
a phone line.
Broadband - A high-speed internet
connection - e.g. cable, DSL, T-1,
ISDN.
On-demand Webcast - Archived
content that is available 24/7 for
a viewer's convenience.
Live Webcast - A live broadcast
that takes place in "real-time" at
a specific time.
Buffering - The process by
which streaming media that is entering
a user's computer at a faster rate
than can be played, is saved as memory
without backing up or overloading
